What is/do you consider an anime convention?

Hey guys!

So I don’t know if many of you heard but last Saturday I went to Uchi-con at the University of Chicago and as I was trying to write my review for it I got stuck.

When I first heard of it, it was listed as an anime convention and I thought nothing of it. When I checked out their website and found out they were a one-day convention, I still didn’t think much about the term ‘convention,’ however, after I’d gone I was left wondering.

By definition “convention, assembly, conference, convocation are names for meetings with a particular purpose. Convention usually suggests a meeting of delegates representing political, church, social, or fraternal organizations.”

So technically, Uchi-con was a convention, however, it didn’t feel like one, which baffles me. There were panels, an artist alley, musical guests, a cafe, badges, a schedule, cosplayers, a photo booth, and everything you see at any big convention just that on a MUCH smaller scale. I believe they got around 1,000 attendees this year for just that Saturday.

So why did I feel like I’d gone to a mini-event or unofficial gathering instead of an official anime convention? I mean, it was free so would having to pay really make that much of a difference? Or the fact that there was only one panel room? That they didn’t have ‘famous’ guests?

What are your thoughts?

  1. It’s probably like the difference between going to a major league sporting event versus a minor league one. When you hear, “I went to a baseball game today,” you tend to think of the huge stadium, big names, and all that. Going to a minor league game is enjoyable, but it just doesn’t have the impact since we tend to think of the major league games.
